I believe we’re all now in agreement that not only is email marketing not dead in 2014, in lots of ways it’s a growing and energetic channel for sales and lead generation. The current email ROI figure is that for every $1 spent, over $43 is returned. Not bad!
But how do you effectively use email marketing? How do we get our emails read amidst the 838 Billion emails sent by marketers in 2013? An excellent start is always to create subject lines that practically force the reader to open it. Here’s how!
Tips for creating effective subject lines
- Keep them short – Studies are showing that as few as 15-40 characters is more than enough with regards to subject line length. The challenge then becomes the right way to convey your message briefly but compellingly.
- Avoid using spam words – Make sure you are not using words that automatically trip the spam filters of email clients, and negate any chance you have at getting your message out. You can find a great list of them here.
- Employ calls to action – One good way to make your subject lines work for you is by using a call to action in the actual subject line. Something like “Download my new software” directs readers to the action you want them to take.
- Use questions – Questions have a two-fold benefit of piquing curiosity and supplying you with much-needed customer information.
- Don’t over-personalize – It’s one thing to thank a customer by name for an action they’ve taken; and it’s another to continually treat them as pals in sales message after sales message. You know the feelingâ€¦
- Be specific – Let them know what this is about! Be very specific and don’t make them guess. Nobody has time or energy to try and figure out what you’re saying.
Don’t forget that the only reason for subject lines to begin with is to get them to open the rest of the email. Make it easy for them by creating terrific subject lines, and watch your open rate soar!
